What is Pansinusitis ?

All of us have sinuses in our faces which are cavities located around our eyes. They help to keep the air moist in order to keep your respiratory tract and internal part of the nose moist. Sinus issues, called sinusitis, can cause tremendous pain to affected patients.

The pain doubles when all four of your sinus cavities are inflamed. This health condition is called Pansinusitis. It is a serious medical condition that can affect your eyes, cheek, nose and forehead.

The anatomy of sinuses

There are four pairs of cavities, known as paranasal sinuses, which are connected to our nose. They are called

  • Sphenoid sinus
  • Front sinus
  • Ethmoid sinus
  • maxillary sinus

Our sphenoid sinus sits just below the base of the brain, towards the backside of the nose while the front sinus is located above the eyes inside the foreheads. The ethmoid sinus remains close to the nasal bone and the eyes.

The fourth pair, maxillary sinuses is located near the cheekbone. When one of these pairs become inflamed, the condition is called sinusitis However, if all four of them are affected it becomes a serious health condition, Pansinusitis, which requires medical treatment.

The causes of Pansinusitis

In most cases, a bacterial or viral infection is the reason of this health condition. When our immune system is weak it can allow tiny germs to penetrate your body by your nose. You can have upper respiratory infection which can lead to Pansinusitis.

It can also be caused by allergies. If the disease becomes acute, you may have to treat it for years. You will have higher chances of falling prey if your immune system is damaged. You can fall ill by common cold or flu. When you get upper respiratory tract infection, the lining of your sinuses swell due to thick secretions which results in little air flow through your nasal passages.

The thick secretion can’t be cleared away by the cilia, small, thin strands of the nose which leads to more damage to your sinuses. Apart from this, existing health conditions can also make you suffer from Pansinusitis.

If you have a history of nasal polyps, asthma or rhinitis then allergens such as smoke, dust and pet dander can easily trigger it.

Here is the list of reasons that cause Pansinusitis:

  • Upper respiratory tract infection
  • Asthma
  • Nasal polyps
  • Sinusitis history
  • Rhinitis
  • Smoking
  • Air pollution
  • Contaminated swimming water
  • Dental Abscess

Tooth abscess that is infected by a bacteria can also cause the disease. Similarly, when you smoke you inhale thousands of toxins which irritate you nose and increase mucus production which leads to Pansinusitis.

You should also be careful while swimming. Chemicals and germs can enter you sinus while swimming in contaminated swimming pools.

Pansinusitis Symptoms

The symptoms of Pansinusitis is similar to Sinusitis but much more severe as all four sinuses are infected. Some of them can last for months if not treated properly.

You will definitely feel pain around your eyes and forehead as a direct symptom of Pansinusitis. The disease can also be detected if the patient suffers from headache, fever, cough, sour throat and nasal congestion.

As it can be caused by dental infections, toothaches can also be an indication. Other symptoms include bad breath, exhaustion, pain in the ears and yellowish discharge from your nose.

Diagnosis of Pansinusitis

The disease can be diagnosed by the following ways

  • CT or MRI: You can get detailed diagnostic images via CT scans or MRI. These scans can also be to diagnose the anatomy of your nose before surgery. When doctors suspect tumors they usually suggest MRI.
  • Nasal Endoscopy: This process is usually used to detect your sinus where a thin tube called endoscope is inserted through your nose to detect the condition of your sinuses.
  • Radiography: Regular radiography is used to detect Pansinusitis where doctors check the mucosal thickening and air fluid levels.
  • Nasal cultures: Culture of your nasal tissues can be done to detect bacterial or viral infection.

Treatment of Pansinusitis

If Pansinusitis is confirmed then you will be advised multiple ways of treatment. If it is caused by bacterial infections, you will be given antibiotics whereas you will go through allergen immunotherapy if the reason of infection are allergies.

In case of nasal blockages, surgery is the only option. You can try some homo remedies to better your condition too. Try drinking a lot of water and use steam to reduce the inflammation. You can also use tablespoon of squeezed ginger and herbal teas.
