Hirsutism is defined by excessive and abnormal hair growth in women. This hair grows in areas where most women typically do not grow hair, such as on their face and neck. It can also occur on the back, chest and abdomen.

What Causes Hirsutism?

Most cases of hirsutism are caused by hormonal imbalances that are the result of certain underlying conditions. This may include, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Insulin deficiency
  • Menopause
  • Excessive insulin
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Ovarian tumors
  • Hyperthecosis
  • Pregnancy
  • Adrenal gland tumors
  • hCG-secreting tumors

Diagnosing Hirsutism

A primary care physician can diagnose hirsutism through a physical examination. They will likely order blood panels to check your hormone and endocrine levels as well as thyroid function. Diagnostic imaging, such as pelvic ultrasounds, can reveal ovarian cysts or ovarian tumors.

Treating Hirsutism

There is no cure for hirsutism, but many women do not seek treat want to seek treatment for it anyways since the condition it is not physically harmful. Other women find it to be a nuisance and choose to use various hair removal methods, such as laser hair removal or waxing, to get rid of the unwanted hair.
