Exfoliative Cheilitis is a rare kind of disease involving the lips. It is also known as “tic de levres”.

In this condition, there is a noticeable inflammation of the Vermillion portion of the lips. A chronic condition like this is often painful and crusted. Such a state is recognized by a constant peeling off of the tender skin of the lips along with flakes and dryness. The constant peeling off of the lips causes great discomfort and exposure of the raw lips becomes really painful while having food. Further complications include cracks, fissures, burning, and pain.

Who are more at risk?

Generally, it occurs to the age group of young adults to people below thirty years old. And it is more common in girls.

Exfoliative Cheilitis Causes

Researchers haven’t yet found any particular cause that might lead to its occurrence. However, after certain observations it can be concluded that following factors often accelerate to its onset:

Sometimes there are some bad habits which can lead to its happening. People who are in the habit of repeating ways that might cause self-destruction can frequently get this condition. Also, people who are in the habit of – lip sucking, lip licking, lip biting can get this easily. People who do not maintain very healthy mouth hygiene and has problems of foul mouth breathing are prone to this. Candida yeast overgrowth can also be held responsible for this. Basically, the fungi Candida albicans exists in the human body and thrive at their own rate which is absolutely harmless. However, if there are any aggravating a factor that multiplies its growth – that might create problems finally leading to this infection.

Patients who are already suffering from HIV have normally a weaker immune system. And therefore, their body can neither probably fight against such onset of infection nor produce antibodies to prevent it. If you maintain poor oral hygiene such as not gurgling the mouth well with water each time after having a meal, or not brushing the teeth properly then it can give rise to bacterial, viral or fungal infection which in turn cause infection at a later stage.

Nutritional deficiency in your diet can also be one of the major reasons to cause Exfoliative cheilitis. This basically happens because your diet highly lacks in keratin. This kind of deficiency can occur in two types – primary and secondary. While the former one is due to prolonged deficiency of proper nutrients and minerals in your diet, the later one is because of improper absorption in the small intestine.

Another reason can be depressed immunity where the body develops such a deformity as to recognize the keratin as a foreign object by the immune system and therefore wards of any of its formation. As a result of which there are increased signs of inflammation and lip peeling and further complications associated with lips. Seldom, this can also occur due to an obvious reaction to some allergy caused by medicine or food. In such cases, all the signs and symptoms are added to constant itchiness of the lips. If a patient is under long term medication of antibiotics due to some other disorder, then the microbial imbalance in the body can cause lead to a rare disease as this.
